Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening has become one of the most popular ways to improve your smile without any invasive treatment. This is a simple and effective treatment which can be carried out by your dentist or at home.

At North Brisbane Dental Clinic, we offer 2 methods of teeth whitening; take home whitening and In surgery whitening. Both are very effective and completely safe. If you would like to book in to have your teeth whitened, call us on 3632 8100 or book online now.

Take Home Whitening:

The at-home whitening kit is an extremely effective way to whiten your teeth. Best results are achieved if this treatment is started very soon after having your teeth professionally cleaned.

The process is very simple:teeth whitening facts

1. Visit your dentist for impressions. Your dentist will take a mould of your upper and lower teeth. These are then used to make plaster models of your teeth.

2. Custom whitening trays tat will adapt specifically to your teeth are made in a laboratory.

3. You visit the dentist again to collect your whitening kit, which includes your custom trays, whitening gel and plaster models.

4. At home, after you have finished eating, and have brushed and flossed your teeth, you place the whitening gel inside the trays and place them over your teeth. These stay in position for approximately 30 minutes, then you remove them and rinse.

5. This 30 minute treatment is usually done once per day, for about 2 weeks, leaving your teeth brighter and whiter.

In Surgery Whitening:

In surgery whitening is for patients who may not have the time to whiten their teeth at home. it involves a single visit to your dentist, that takes aproximately 1 hour. The process is as follows:

1. Your dentist cleans and polishes your teeth thoroughly, thus removing any surface plaque that may block the whitening gel.

2. Your gums are coated with a protective resin in order to prevent the whitening solution coming into contact with your soft tissues.

3. Protective gause is placed around your cheeks, lips and over your tongue.

4. The whitening gel is then placed over the teeth and remains in place for 8 to ten minutes. It is then rinsed and re-applied.

5. Step 4 is repeated 4 times.

6. Your teeth will be rinsed and the protective layers removed from your soft tissues, leaving your teeth whiter and brighter.

This procedure occasionally causes some discomfort. In order to minimise post-operative sensitivity, we always give patients some sensitive toothpaste to apply at home later.

After your treatment (take home or in surgery), your teeth will immediately be visibly whiter! During active whitening and for aproxiamtely 24 hours after each whitening treatment, your teeth are slighly more porous than usual. This means that while undegoing whitening, your teeth ar more susseptable to soaking up new stains. This state of increased porousity is temporary and is easilly countered by avoiding foods and drinnks such as coffee, tea, red wine, curry and beetroot during whitening treatments. If you love these foods and cant go without, just be sure to brush your teeth after consuming them and no staining will occur.

Depending on your lifestyle, your teeth may eventually discolour again. If this occurs, re-treatment is usually done after 2 to 3 years, if at all.

Occasionally, patients may experience some increased sensitivity to cold during or soon after treatment. This is usially very mild and is always temporary. Using products such as Tooth Mousse, Sensodyne, or Colgate Pro relief, can speed up the resolution of such symptoms.
