Dental Veneers

A veneer is a thin layer of restorative material placed over the front of the tooth in order to improve dental aesthetics. They can be fabricated from porcelain or resin.

The purpose of veneers is cosmetic. They do not alter the basic structure of your tooth, but merely create a new facing to improve appearance. Some common reasons for doing veneers are:

  • Discolouration of teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Undersized teeth

In many cases, the placement of veneers is to mask a combination of the above problems. Dental materials and technology have advanced to the point where almost any cosmetic problem can be fixed.

Should I choose porcelain or resin veneers?

This is a question to discuss with your dentist. The main pros and cons of the two different types of veneer are:

  Porcelain Veneers Resin
Procedure Indirect – requires two appointments with 3 weeks in between Direct – single visit
Longevity Will last approximately 10 years May require replacement or maintenance after 5-7 years
Aesthetics Excellent Excellent
Loss of tooth structure Requires approximately 1.5mm of tooth to be trimmed away Very little or no loss of tooth structure
Indications Generally only indicated for masking severe staining or if previous resin veneers have failed Usually the preferred option as the procedure is minimally invasive
Cost $1050 - $1100 each $217 - $$350 each (varies depending on individual case)
